All the better; all the worse . . .

All the better; all the worse . . .

Postby Nayt on Sat Apr 24, 2010 1:07 am

The book was opened with minimal care for its bindings. It'd been read and reread a dozen times, and threatened by now to come apart at the seams. Its reader scanned the first page.

They stood as equals, two sides of a spectrum, but unsure what the spectrum itself meant or what it was they represented to begin with. Life and death came so quickly for people like them, the warrior class ruled and guided by the upper dreggs of society. They were tools of war, weapons with a conscience. In the battlefield, they stood on opposite sides, the man and the woman: the defender and the invader. They were unassuming in their armor, easily missed from the rest of the fighting many-- yet as heroes, they stood out.

They'd done this before, this fight. It was little more than a repeat of old times. Since the beginning, they traded wins and losses, and now, upon a battlefield they scarcely recognized, one's final loss had to pass. They'd long since accepted their tasks, and it was far too late now to question what they'd done.

The boy sat up in bed, the book in his lap, and the next page held between his thumb and index finger. He had a habit of this, and all the books he read frequently had little stains, barely visible lest they were in the right light, permanently marred upon the lower corner of each page. He read of the man and woman's conflict, the fighting and the senselessness of the battle they seemed unwilling to accept. He'd read it all before, numerous times so far; he knew how it ended and how he always felt when he reached a certain passage, but he scarcely had the foresight to simply skip the passage. He turned the page.

"Haven't you ever wondered?" he asked her. His blade was let down, not quite released, but permitted to set by his side in a non-threatening way.

She, on the other hand, did not lower her blade. "Wondered what?"

"What we'd be like . . . if life was different?" He reflected for the both of them, "If you and I grew up together--what would we be like? Like . . . this, still? Two killers without a cause?"

"Does it really matter?" she replied, "What's done is done and there's no taking any of it back. There's no unmaking and remaking what we are."

The man smiled sadly. He dropped his arms to his sides and allowed his blade to fall to the stone below. "And yet, we'd all be better for it, wouldn't we?"

Toushikyo shut the book. He always hated that part. That sort of self reflection drove him nuts. It got his mind wandering too far. What would've happened, if he'd been different? If his family were different. If they were supernatural forces in the world, and not condemned to the same monotony of this village? Living every day with minimal recourse and continuous repetition? Oh, how it would change so quickly, had he power. A power. Something cold and efficient. He'd have frozen anyone that got in his way.

But alas, he wasn't the sort. Toushiko was just a boy. Barely fifteen years old, yet self educated well beyond his years. That was all he'd going for him. He was awkward, short and skinny and as frail as a thin ice sculpture, condemned to poor eyesight and reading glasses, and lost in a world that continuously seemed to forget he ever existed.

He looked out through his window, up to the stars and the low cloud cover that shrouded half of them. It was only after a second that he realized, across the gap between his house and the village clinic, another boy was doing just the same. As soon as their eyes met, Toushikyo leered at him disapprovingly. He knew that boy. He was Toushikyo's age. Toushikyo didn't bother to look for a reaction; he laid back down in bed, curled under the covers for warmth, shut his eyes, and pretended to be asleep. He only needed to lie to him for a few minutes before his body accepted it as truth, and he slowly fell to slumber.

Across the way from him, another boy stared back from his window. As the leering boy turned away he couldn't help but roll his eyes; Toushikyko was always like that, and it had long ago stopped phasing Eldridge Tsukimono.

For a few more minutes he stared at the starry sky. It was a nice night; while the clouds made viewing the stars difficult, the full moon still shone clearly, illuminating Hillcrest Village.

He didn't stargaze for long. He walked over to his desk, where a couple books lay opened, unfinished. The first was an epic tale of heroes and villains, though it was sometimes hard to tell who was which. Great powers collided, fates were changed, and much drama ensued. It was fun to read, but he was rather glad it wasn't him in those stories. He had his hands full with studying, helping his parents, and spending time with his friends (which was sometimes relaxing, and sometimes exhausting). If he had to save the world or something on top of that, he'd probably go insane.

He picked up the second book. It was a medical textbook, the most recent one he'd been studying. Exiting his room and heading for the clinic, he noted that his parents were already in bed as he went to the small office. While he was not a doctor yet like his mother and father, he'd spent most of his life studying to become one, and since he tended to stay up late anyway it fell to him to mind the clinic at night. He could take care of day to day care well enough, and he could always wake his parents if there was an emergency.

Lighting the desk lamp, he sat down and continued his studies...

By morning, Eld would be woken in the harshest of ways. He'd suffer a kick to the ribs of terrible strength, perhaps even enough to throw him out of bed. Truth be told, Eld had a bad habit of sleeping in sometimes, and needed to these sorts of rude awakenings to get him up--and quickly.

"Gods be damned, you lazy bastard!"

Were he to look up and over his bed, he'd find a familiar figure standing on the other side of the bed as he, her foot still lifted and against his bedsheet--incidentally mussing it up with dirt from beneath her boot. The girl was about Eld's age, perhaps even a year older. She had bright red hair that was always kept back in a pony tail, and wore a pair of thick black framed glasses over her eyes. She was a bit tall for her age and gender, and built like the junior farmhand she was. She had on a flannel button-up and jeans, all of which was still mildly dirty from the day's jobs so far. Eld would find her standing there, dirty boot upon his bed, with her hands upon her hips as some show of victory.

Her name was Sarah. She did this frequently.

"Huwagh!" was roughly the noise Eld made as a sudden force drove him over the side of the bed. He slipped in the small space between his bed and the wall, pulling the sheets down on top of him in a pile.

For several moments there was silence and stillness, but then a groan escaped and the pile rose until a head poked out of it. "Saraaaah~" the boy whined in protest. "Can't you be a bit more gentle? I may sleep in, but I stay up later too, you know." Grumbling, he rubbed the sleep from his eyes as he rose. "And get your dirty boot off my bed. I just washed those too, sheesh..."

Not that he expected her to listen to him. She rarely did, and never in the morning. As far as she was concerned, anyone who didn't wake up at the crack of dawn to perform backbreaking labor was a lazy wimp, and their opinions didn't matter.

But his grumbling wasn't to be taken too seriously. He might not appreciate her method of waking him up, but he was always glad to see her.

"'Tch!" Sarah scoffed as she pulled her foot off Eld's bed.

She stamped it down next to her other foot, folded her arms over her chest, and averted her entire attention from Eld. There was a vague hint of disgust upon her face. Truth be told, Eld had completely forgotten about something. If he'd remembered, he'd have woken up long ago, and she wouldn't have had to come in here and kick him out of bed. This was actually one of the few times that Sarah was sincerely upset with him for sleeping in so much. This was kind of important to her, and he was just ready to miss it, just like that!

"I can't believe you're sleepin' like this, and so late," Sarah scoffed.

For as responsible as Eld was around the house, he was certainly crap for keeping up with his friends!

With the smallest hint of offense, Sarah frowned, "You were totally plannin' on missin' my race, weren't you?"

A look of confusion crossed Eld's face. "Your race? But..." He trailed off as he glanced out the window; the sun was much higher in the sky than he wanted it to be. "W-Wha--jeez! When did it get so..."

He had fully intended to go see the race, but apparently his body had a disagreement with his mind and he hadn't woken up when he'd wanted to. He quickly climbed over the bed and scrambled past her to his dresser.

"J-Just give me a minute, alright?" Not even waiting for her to reply, let alone leave the room, he started to pull his shirt off and search for an appropriate one to wear.

Eld's realization almost made her want to punch him in the face. He could be so absentminded sometimes. If she weren't around to kick him out of bed half the time, he'd never appear at one of these outings, especially the important ones. Like today. Sarah had a score to settle, and Eld was supposed to be in the crowd!

Sarah fumed a bit longer, but only long enough to realize that Eld was practically stripping down with her still in the room. Sarah panicked almost instantly. She jumped back and covered her face with her hands.

"A-ah!?" Sarah cried, "W-wait I'm still in the--"

Sarah backed up, grabbed the handle of Eld's door, and shut it behind her quickly. She didn't want to see him down to his skibbies. That was the last thing she wanted to see. What was Eld, a scrawny, no muscle kid? He probably looked anorexic without his clothes on.

Eld would be able to hear at least a few of her comments on the other side of the door, most of which included variations of of, "No good" and "indecent . . ."

Whether Eld would have genuinely stripped all the way down or had simply figured taking off his shirt in front of her wasn't a big deal would remain a mystery; it was only a few minutes before the door opened again, and he stepped out of his room fully dressed. Though he normally dressed notably different than most of the village, he was now in a pair of jeans and a nondescript brown shirt, an outfit that was a bit better suited for a day at the racetrack.

He glanced back at his bed; a strong part of him really wanted to clean up the mess Sarah made before he left, but he knew he didn't have time just now. "Sorry to keep you waiting. Shall we?" he asked, gesturing for her to lead the way.

Sarah was waiting (im)patiently outside of Eld's door. She paced with her hands upon her hips, and when he was out of his room and ready to go, she folded her arms over her chest and almost scoffed at him--but refrained, and only because he was kind enough to come to the race. He could have just told her outright that he wasn't interested and therefore was not going to show. Of course, then she'd have to lay him out and storm off, but still, he was kind of enough to at least humor her, so Sarah refrained from giving him the whole nine yards of her displeasure.

"Well, we're prolly thanks to someone," Sarah jabbed, "But let's go."

The track itself was a makeshift at Sarah's family's ranch. It was half-way across the village from Eld's house, but easily walkable. Sarah didn't talk much along the way. Truth be told, she was steeling herself for the event. It wasn't anything special. Really, it was all just a matter of pride--but pride could be important sometimes, so she demanded that he closest friends showed up. Her little sister came, obviously, and Maya was definitely going to show up. Which meant Eld had to, as well, or else the whole crew wouldn't be complete. The ranch was near the forest line, close to where village became wilderness.

When they arrived, it was high noon and there was already a small crowd. Maya and Emily were waiting out front of the ranch house. The dirt path for the race, one that wrapped all about their vast property, began directly behind the ranch house.

Maya was a short girl that, though Eld and Sarah's age, looked much, much younger than they. She looked the part of an eleven year old girl, with short black hair and dark eyes. The second she saw Eld, she was almost elated--but then she saw Sarah and how displeased she looked, and immediately looked away nervously. She wore a blue sun dress, one of her favorite outfits. Emily--Em for short--on the other hand, took well after Sarah. She was short, though, and scrawny to boot--but she didn't look her age at all. Maya looked Em's age and Em looked Maya's age. She had shoulder-length red hair and a few unfortunate marks on her cheek that she wasn't all too fond of--but, well, accidents happen. Sometimes they just leave permanent scars. She stood by Maya's side, directly contrasting her in an all black outfit . . . perhaps not the best choice for the heat of the day, but it was her preference sometimes.

"About time you showed!" Em shouted as soon as she saw them. Maya attempted to wave at Eld, but was a bit too nervous to and barely managed a lift of her fingers.

"S-Sorry, I overslept," Eld replied sheepishly. He figured he must have been up later than he'd thought. It was hard sometimes, since his schedule was adjusted about a third later than just about everyone else's.

Figuring he'd better preempt any potential railing on him from either of the Vaerbond sisters, he added, "You should hurry to the stables and get ready, Sarah." It was kind of funny that she was at all worried about the race; there was hardly anyone around that could beat her.

Truth be told, they'd all known each other forever. Sarah was loud, boisterous, and violent; she was an extremely physical person that carried grudges easily and saw almost everything in life as some sort of competition. Em, on the other hand, was much more mellow. At twelve years old, she was extremely intelligent--but not quite as well learned as Eld or the Tsukimonos. She had a lot of free time to spend with books and technical manuals, and was great at picking up small hobbies here and there, but she wasn't at all a master of anything--though, she might have liked to sell herself as one; jack of all trades, master of many. Then there was Maya, quiet and shy as she was; her only skill-set seemed to lie in philosophical and religious studies. She loved fiction of all kind, but was fairly devout in her own personal religious beliefs. She was the easiest of the three girls to get flustered and embarrassed.

"Heh," Sarah punched her palm readily, "Yeah. Yeah, it's on."

Sarah turned from the three of them and started away. The second she cleared the ranch house, she practically started to jog for the stables. They were in the far distance, at the end of the family's property, and the opposite end of the track, it seemed. Once Sarah was away from the house, off on the track and heading to the stables, Em sulked her head and shoulders. She sighed, prompting Mayako to look upon her curiously.

"Ugh, this is going to be embarrassing . . ." Em muttered following her sigh.

Maya looked to Em with a curious tilt of her head. "What is?"

"This race," Em replied.

The Cizokian girl paused to think about it. Actually, she--and Eld both, actually, though she was unaware of this--didn't know who Sarah was racing to begin with, only that it was some sort of big deal.

"Hey, whoever challenged Sarah knows what they're getting themselves into." Sarah's skills with horses was well known in Hillcrest, enough that he couldn't think of any practical reason someone would want to race her one on one. A group race, maybe, but there weren't that many people around that owned their own horses, and if they did they were usually bred for hauling, not racing.

While well educated--especially considering that all his knowledge came from either self-study or being tutored by his parents--what Eld had in academics he lacked in application. Other than first aid he didn't have any appreciable skills like the kind Em was known to pick up.

"Wait," Eld said as he realized something. "Did you mean Sarah's going to get embarrassed? Who's she racing?"

"Actually . . ." Em trailed off. She averted her eyes away from Eld, actually feeling somewhat embarrassed about this. She wasn't the one responsible or anything; it was all Sarah's doing. It was all classic Sarah, though. Overreacting, overdramatizing, and overpersonalizing. It was just the way she worked sometimes, and when someone hurt her pride, she always seemed to be out to get the person, regardless of how. She would invent a brand new way to strike at them if she absolutely needed to. ". . . Sarah issued the challenge . . ."

Maya was about to ask the same question; she'd just parted her lips to ask, but Eld spoke before her, and she quieted herself with a small feeling of embarrassment.

"You, uh, you remember the foot race last week?" Em asked, "Well, Sarah kind of held a grudge and . . ."

The girl rounded the corner of the Vaerbond ranch house and showed herself by bumping into Eld without a second thought. Truth be told, she hadn't even seen him there. She'd just turned the corner absentmindedly--and bam. There he was. And then there she was, sitting on her rear upon the ground. The girl was barely older than Em and just about as short as her, too. She was about as frail as Maya, but she at least looked her own age. She had long platinum blond hair that she usually kept in a side ponytail, but kept back in a riding helmet for the day, one that matched the rest of the light tan riding gear she wore.

Her name was Akizetsumei. She did this frequently.

"Owwwwwww," Akizets whined.

Footrace? As Em talked, Eld tried to remember, but he honestly couldn't keep track of every single person Sarah antagonized in one way or another. It was kind of a long list, and he suspected that the only reason most people put up with it is she could usually back up her bragging.

Well, that and she was as quick with her fists as she was with her feet.

Before he could ask if Sarah had actually lost a footrace, something bounded into him. He stumbled, surprised, but fortunately caught his balance. Most people would be at least a little annoyed at being bumped into, but as he turned to see what happened the only expression on his face was one of mild concern.

"Are you alright?" he asked, bending down and offering a hand to the small figure that had run into him.

The way Em looked at her, it was obvious that she didn't know what to make of the girl. Akizetsumei was known in the village; it was next to impossible to not know someone by their face here in Hillcrest. It was supposedly larger than it used to be, but it still wasn't particularly large. Akizetsumei stood out above all others in certain aspects. Having been there at the foot race last week, Em was personally surprised to see Sarah beaten so harshly by this girl. Akizets was a tiny little thing; she was this weak looking and overly thin girl, she couldn't be any taller than four feet and ten inches tall, and she was just so . . . so ditsy.

How this girl could run faster than Sarah, Em hadn't the slightest clue. Back then, she didn't even trip and fall over anything. She ran like it was natural to her, and practically lapped Sarah by the end of it . . .

Akizetsumei opened her eyes to look up to Eld when he offered his hand to her. She had brown eyes, but they had a weird look about them in the light, almost as if they were actually red. She looked up to him confusedly at first, but soon smiled brightly. Pain was a moot point in the presence of kindness!

"I'm okay!" she replied enthusiastically.

The girl didn't hesitate to take Eld's hand and let him help her stand. She stood up, spry as ever, and dusted off her riding pants--though they were already dusty to begin with, and weren't actually hers. They barely fit her.

"Thanks," the girl said thankfully as she dusted herself off.

"Hey, aren't those my--" Em began, but hushed herself when she realized the answer mid-sentence. Yes, those were her riding gear. Sarah was loaning out her stuff without her permission. There would have to be repayment for this in the future--if not in the near future, then in the not too distant future . . .
