It's pretty much as Alex said. Oblivion and Purgatory mirror Dystopia proper, and the last two worlds are spiritually connected to it. Dystopia proper is the only one of them that has a set of stars to look at in the night sky. Character origin is important, because you're effectively adding something to the world with each post, and I personally, as the original creator of Dystopia, want it to remain clean of influences from that of alternate universes and the like. The easiest answer is that it's my personal preference. Again, harkening back to DC comics: when you've jammed so many connections to alternate universes into one single universe that you have to make one long running plot where you cull and separate these universes, you have a problem.

The plot you sent me honestly seems just fine. I'd certainly play a character in it. Aside from mentioning multiple worlds, there's no indication of multiple universes outside of the established few. That being said, the same thing you asked applies: what does the character's origin matter? If you don't much feel like reinventing an old concept, it's easy enough to just change the details of birthplace and a few place names, and the same fantasy character fits into just about every other fantasy world and roleplay.

That being said, I have no idea why that thread died off right as soon as you joined it, but I know it had nothing to do with character origin. There were some long standing issues between players and creative differences in Kalmarden that sadly never got ironed out.

Honestly...being asked to make a character you've worked on and built a backstory to fit into a world completely not of your making is a restriction. And in this case, one that basically breaks up the plot.

I invite you, if you will, to read my post for my character, Eight in the Chasing the Unknown thread.

Kindly explain exactly how believable it would be for a nation on Dystopia to go completely unnoticed whilst developing a being like Eight (or an army of such beings). It isn't exactly something easy to change as it goes very much into the fabric of the char itself.

Perhaps I'm just being a little too grand in my thinking. At least I'm trying to come up with something fresh and far-reaching. But whatever. I'll amend my post so that Jekyll and Eight come from a nation to the uncharted south known as Xelion, a rigid war-like regime under the control of the four Ministers. Being so remote, they've mastered technologies that the rest of Utopia has yet to see until now.

Just to add my two cents: Yeah, it kind of sucks putting a lot of effort into a character and then not being able to use them without changes (significant or not). But imagine the same situation and doing that with an entire setting, and maybe you can understand where Nate's coming from.

That, and I remember a bunch of tools tried to start a "forum invasion" or something awhile back, but that's neither here nor there.

Anyway, I hope you'll find it's worth it to stick around. He could definitely use more people running the plots; there's usually a fair amount of players floating around, but not many people giving them any direction.
